Designing the Squiggly Career

As a believer in the power of moments, I think beginnings should be celebrated. Today, I’m celebrating the start of my mentorship with Linda Tillman as part of the Queensland Tourism Industry Council’s mentoring program.

Usually, I am the one mentoring others, but I strongly believe that mentoring is a lifelong journey. It was also a great moment to reflect on my career journey and appreciate just how non-linear it is. Adele Lamine-Romain told me six years ago that career journeys are non-linear. At the time, my younger self thought, “that’s an interesting observation by Adele”.

Looking at the infographic I put together (with the help of AI) to tell the story of my journey, my head started spinning a little. Adele was entirely right. I must admit, my career journey has been fun! There have been sweat and tears along the way as well. I designed this journey by intention and looking back, strangely everything makes sense. I have been handpicked for jobs and faced quite a few rejections.

The upside of getting rejected? You wonder: what would you do if you weren’t afraid? The striving to be excellent (I’ve been blessed with a ton of drive) keeps you up at night but also brings out the most creative side of you. A rejection is sometimes simply a redirection. The universe telling you “Not there, you are supposed to be over here”.

Have I felt mad sometimes? Burning with a flame to fix experiences that are broken? Honestly, yes, sometimes. I have systematically studied failure and think we can learn from failure and do better – create better human experiences for better outcomes for humans. Everyone wins. When done purposefully, even the planet comes out a winner.

I appreciate the care the QTIC team put into intentionally matching me with a mentor who can guide me in shaping my consulting and startup to have the most strategic impact. Exciting times ahead!
